Phuket Attractions | Phuket Island Beaches
Karon, is the second largest, most developed of Phuket Island's idyllic beaches. It is an hour's drive from the airport, and 15 minutes away from Patong Beach. Karon Beach is an ideal family destination if you have kids. In contrast to Patong Beach, it is relatively quiet, relaxed and rarely crowded. It is a haven to which you can retreat to get away from the crowds and the bars.
Karon Beach is about 3 kilometers long, and spacious enough to give you a sense of privacy that you would not have on Patong Beach. Karon also beats out Patong when it comes to the cost of food and accommodation. Karon Beach is not as developed as Patong, however, very little of the construction is on the actual beach, and this helps keep it cleaner and tidier than Patong.
During the NE monsoons (November to April), conditions at the beach are idyllic; from May to October, however, strong undertows develop that make swimming a dangerous proposition. Warning signs will be put up when the swimming conditions are less than favorable.
The family-oriented nature of Karon Beach is reflected in the types of hotels that you will find here, which range from small guesthouses to family resorts. There are also big name hotels such as the Hilton. Karon beach also boasts several great restaurants including steak houses, seafood restaurants as well as Thai cuisine from one of several small family restaurants. For really inexpensive but authentic Thai food, go over to Patak Road and eat with the locals.
A coral reef can be found to the south of the beach. It stretches into the sea toward a little offshore island called Boo Island. The water at these reefs only goes as deep as 9 meters, creating a natural spot for dive training. Lionfish, puffers, snapper and scorpionfish can be found at these sites. It is also a good spot for snorkeling.
This quiet beach stays that way even after the sun has set, because there are few bars and very little in the way of nightlife. This makes it an ideal destination for families vacationing at Phuket Island, Thailand.
