Kata is actually two beaches that are divided by a cliff. Both beaches are quite lovely, with pale yellow sand in the centre and interesting rocks at the margins. Kata Yai and Kata Noi together offer a good mix for the somewhat older family. The kiddies can have fun in Kata Noi. Mum and Dad can investigate Kata Yai after they go to bed. The hotels and bungalows are inexpensive, and there are a variety of things to do.
Kata Noi Beach
You reach Kata Noi (Little Kata) via a winding path down a small hill. You won't see the beach until you are almost on top of it. The bay is small and intimate, and the beach is quite perfect. The beautiful Kata Thani Hotel dominates this beach, which makes it an easy place to have a drink or book a few nights' lodging.
All in all, this beach and the locally owned businesses surrounding it feel like a hidden seaport town. This makes it a great location to enjoy a more relaxed pace, yet stay near civilization. The snorkeling at nearby Koh Pu is quite good.
Kata Yai Beach
The second beach is Kata Yai (Big Kata). This looks a bit more like Patong, with its swath of development. There are plenty of places to stay, to eat, and to buy mementos for your trip.
If you are looking for a place that offers the same urban excitement in a gorgeous tropical setting the way Patong does, then Kata Yai may be the place for you. We like it because it makes us feel like discriminating travelers. It is also a great alternative place to stay if Patong is full up.
There are plenty of opportunities to rent water craft. When the sun goes down, you can turn in your water craft and enjoy the many places to eat, drink, and be merry.
