Phuket Island Shopping
Phuket Shopping | Things to buy in Phuket
No vacation would be complete without a shopping trip. Phuket Island has plenty of opportunities to do some serious shopping so make sure you leave room in your suitcase.
In Phuket Island, there are many traditional hand made items that most tourists find interesting as well as modern items such as CD's, DVD's, perfume, jewelry and clothing. All these "western" items are sold at deep discounts in Phuket Island's many shopping malls and department stores.
If antiques and hand crafted items interest you, then a stroll through some of Phuket Island's many street vendors and open-air markets are for you. Tourists can find many authentic Thai items on a shopping trip through these markets. Arts and Crafts, silk-screened T-shirts, wooden carvings, leather items, silk flowers, candles, silverware, bath products and much more can all be found in these little shopping spots. More traditional Phuket Island goods that tourists can buy include traditional wooden puppets, ceramics of all sorts, knives, and products made of traditional materials like water buffalo horn. Or how about Batik (colorful cloth made into shirts, sarongs and bags), silk, or pearls? All these authentic Thai items can be found on a shopping excursion around Phuket Island.
If modern shopping is more for you, Phuket has plenty of shopping malls and large stores to accommodate your needs. One of the best places to snag great deals on all types of new merchandise is in Central Festival Phuket right outside of Phuket City. There is a 120,000 square meter shopping mall that offers all the modern convinces and merchandise including air conditioning, a Cineplex, restaurants, spas, ATM's, currency exchange, and a supermarket. You can expect to find any modern item you want from clothing to perfume and electronics. The mall is open from 10.00 to 22.00 hours every day.
Another popular shopping destination on Phuket Island are the Western beaches. Just about every beach on the west coast has stores with a selection of western CD's and DVD's for about 50 to 100 baht each (one or two EUR). Most of these movie shops have quality goods but you should be careful and watch for poor spelling on signs and shops that refuse to let you try movies before you buy them. With so many shopping opportunities on Phuket Island, it will take more than one trip to experience it all.
