Phuket Island, Thailand has the country's second busiest airport - Phuket International Airport (HKT). For millions of tourists from all over the world, it is the gateway to PI's fascinating attractions. Ten international and domestic airlines operate from the airport, with up to 24 flight operations handled per hour.
The airport is located to the north of the island, and a few kilometers from the Mai Khao Beach. It is 32 kilometers from Phuket town. The airport's IATA code is HKT, and its ICAO code is VTSP.
It is a pretty compact airport, so all the airport's amenities are within a pretty short walking distance once you land on Phuket Island.
Getting To Your Hotel
You may arrange transportation with your hotel or your travel agent ahead of time. If not, you have a number of choices.
The airport has two counters that offer car rental services. You may take one of the red and yellow metered taxis that operate from the airport. Alternatively, the arrival hall has a limousine counter where you can shell out a little extra to ride one of the official airport limousine taxies. The hourly bus or minivan services are an inexpensive option. It is about a 30-minute drive to downtown Phuket.
A special shuttle minivan service was recently launched to operate between the Airport and downtown Phuket. The vans depart for downtown every hour.
You can change your money at one of the airport's currency exchanges. Alternatively, you may use one of the several ATM machines available on the first floor. The ATMs have the lowest transaction charges, especially if your card bears the 'Cirrus' logo.
Telephone and Internet Service
There are numerous payphones available to you at the airport. Alternatively, you may rent a mobile phone. The airport also has SIM cards for sale. If you purchase one of these, you can get it set up in your cell phone at no charge at the International Service Center. An Internet service is available on the first floor that charges in 15-minute increments.
