Monday, July 14, 2008 Phuket sets to be one of the leading medical tourism destinations
In 2009, Phuket has been chosen to host The World Medical Health Tourism Conference, an international and most diverse networking opportunity which will be attended by participants from various countries worldwide. The conference will be held on September 16-18,2009 at Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort and Spa.
The World Medical Health Tourism Conference (TWMHTC) is one of the initiatives in making Phuket as the major destination for health and wellness in Thailand. The event will help open more doors for local investors into the international market, as well as for the global health care community to explore the possibilities of outsourcing medical treatments to Thailand. It is believed, that the presence of well-equipped hospitals, the service-from-the-heart hospitality of the Thais and the world-renown Thai spa and wellness centers around the country help create a unique and rejuvenating experience for medical travelers in Thailand. Furthermore, it has been estimated that the conference will bring an economical windfall to Phuket of about 10 million USD over the two weeks time. Although, the formal conference runs only for 3 days, many post and pre-conference activities are planned. By securing Thai Airways as the major airline carrier and the Hilton Arcadia Hotel Phuket as the venue, all is looking good for a hugely successful event at this early stage. All of Thailand may benefit from this conference as that many conference delegates have indicated that they would like to travel and explore more places in Thailand apart from Phuket and Bangkok. 2007 was definitely a very good tourist season for Phuket, with barely anything like a 'Low Season' (and the locals call it the Green Season anyway). Bookings did pick up already in May and June and the drop off after the summer holidays in August did also not happen last year.
According to the TAT's latest statistics, about 8 million tourists visited Phuket, Phang Nga and Krabi provinces, together spending a total of 120 billion baht. Specifically with regard to tourist numbers for Phuket, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has announced that more than 5 million tourists visited Phuket in 2007, spending a total of 94.239 billion baht, making it the leading destination out of the three local provinces. The official TAT forecast for 2008 for Phuket is a -- rather very optimistic -- 6 million visitors to Phuket, a number totally unquestioned by local media like the Phuket Gazette (why such official numbers are never cross-checked by this newspaper is of course a question only their publishers would be able to answer). However rising oil prices are seen by many locals as one main reason why Patong Beach and other beaches on Phuket seem to be in reality unnaturally quiet this year. Which of course means, all the more tropical ambiance for those that do come! Labels: hotels Read more of this blog entry! Friday, March 28, 2008 New Marriott Courtyard Patong in flames
A big plume of smoke widely visible rose over Patong Beach today early afternoon and crowds gathered near Patong Beach Road to watch firefighters put out the flames that engulfed the corner section of the Marriott Courtyard Patong, currently under construction and scheduled to open soon.
As local news reported, Kathu Police Superintendent Col Grissak Songmoonnak said that the fire started around 14:00 and it took firefighters around half an hour to get control over the fire. "We believe that a spark from workers carrying out construction might have ignited insulation and started the fire. We have no more information at this time and we are still investigating the cause of the fire. It is too early to put a value on the extent of the damage," Col Grissak was quoted by local media. The hotel was formerly known as the Grand Tropicana Phuket and the building was taken over by the Marriott group after the Phuket Grand Tropicana hotel was in the news in February last year: several guests from a group of Finnish tourists contracted legionnaires' disease due to hygienic problems in the cooling system of the hotel and the hotel was closed by Phuket health authorities.
