Sharks and Rays at the Similan islands
The Similan Islands are a group of nine Islands running north to south about 65 miles north-west of Phuket. They have white sandy beaches, tropical forests and some of the most spectacular diving in the world.
There is an amazing variety of marine life including reef sharks, guitar and manta rays, leopard sharks and huge schools of tropical fish.
Especially during the hot season fromFebruary to April, the rising sea temperature causes a boom in plankton levels. This in turn attracts whale sharks and manta rays to be drawn to the Similan islands to feed.
