Because Phuket is an island the water borne viruses and diseases do sometimes present a problem. Phuket Island authorities have developed a health development system which follows and meets Western standards. The hospitals are staffed with educated people who are extremely competent.

The avian flu is one of the biggest scares in Thailand. The good news is there have been no cases reported on Phuket Island. Most tourists and other guests will not come into contact with a live chicken anyways. So the fear of contracting avian flu is mute.

Malaria is something that has been reported on Phuket Island. This is a mosquito borne illness. Most of the cases are reported among the agricultural workers. Phuket Island has reported the beach areas are mosquito free. For the visitor's protection it is recommended they wear pants and long sleeves or a jacket when venturing out in the evening.

Sexually transmitted diseases are everywhere around the world. Thailand started a program to encourage the practice of safe sex. It is estimated that about 5% of the population suffers from HIV. Even a casual encounter on the island should always have both partners practicing safe sex.

Many times it is the drinking water of a new destination which can cause some visitors to become ill. Phuket Island does recommend visitors to drink bottled water so this does not happen. The water and ice available to the guests at the hotels is very safe to drink. The water has been run through a reverse osmosis system.

Phuket Island wants all it's guests to enjoy the sights and sounds of this tropical paradise. Using a few precautionary measures can guarantee a perfect holiday. Enjoying Phuket Island can be easy with the proper knowledge.
