I trusted that Amanpuri was the best option for Phuket. Unfortunately, this resort has seen better days. Our Ocean Front Villa was overgrown and felt more like a jungle view.
The concierge had a difficult time with English and dropped the ball on most our non-beach requests.
As for the beach, very nice but shared with another resort.
Overall, an OK stay but not one to go out of your way for.

You need to select your villa carefully at the Amanpuri. Some of the Villas are definitely not worth the money, for example, they overlook the parking lot and ar a long walk from the beach. But, otherwise it is a great hotel.
The alternative is the Banyan Tree Phuket where you can get a villa with a pool for the same price.

You can't beat the service, beauty and serenity of any Aman resort and the Amanpuri was no exception to the rule. It was fabulous and I enjoyed taking their private yacht on a tour of the islands. The hotel is located on higher ground and they were able to save all guests and staff from the tsunami. The staff got everyone off of the beach in time. The islanders were so hurt by the tsunami. It is wonderful that people are traveling to Phuket as the tourism helps to support the local islanders.

The food was delicious at the Amanpuri and Pansea beach is beautiful and peaceful. I loved it there! The employees actually poured water on the hot sand so that it wouldn't burn our feet. I couldn't believe it!

Truly the best of the best. I have stayed at many of the nicest resorts in SE Asia, and this topped them all. Everything from the service to the rooms and food. The staff were all genuinely friendly and very interested in ensuring you get whatever you came for: fun in sun, privacy, boating etc.. We ate at both the Italian and Thai restaurants and both were well above average compared to other resort type restaurants - don't expect a michellin starred six-course meal but do expect very fine dining, with the Thai being the same quality food but a more casual setting. We did three boat trips - two with the hotel and 1 outside the resort. The cost of the resort one for a private small boat and lunch was about 300 US compared with about 80 US for the local one. There was no comparison between the two and if you are just looking to see the sights and don't mind as many as 300 tourist packed in on the boat go for the cheaper one but for the extra 200 you got so much more it was unbelievable - private island for picnics, special snorkeling spots for just your party, water and beer, cold towels , dry towels, wonderful crew etc.. My wife used the spa services and raved about it. As far as going into town, I would pass not really anything go on or in anyway comparable to the resort.

Less is more is the key here.
Have stayed in 5 separate Aman hotels - they are so NOT resorts, despite the Aman Resort name - in the last couple of years, with 5 weeks this year. All are exemplary, with Le Melezin least conforming to the Asian service culture - the French still struggle to raise a smile.
Aman's philosophy of "ask and it shall happen - provided it's legal" prevails at the Amanpuri, as at all the other Amans in the region.
It is understated, beautifully designed, sits comfortably in its environment, on a great beach and is affordable.
